  • Nature Preserve: We are planning on building stairs down a steap part of the path that leads into the Nature Preserve. In the wet seasons this path is often flooded out and dangerous to walk down. The project will be discussed during the first general interest meeting and is looking to be started some time in late September to mid October.

Peru Project: EWB-Binghamton is currently partnering with Amazon Promise to help create a medical clinic in Belen, Peru. The people of Belen would greatly benefit from increased sanitation and modern medical attention.

EWB-Binghamton's role is to design and implement both an electrical system powered by an alternative energy source and a water purification system. This will be EWB-Binghamton's most ambitious project to-date. Many elements need to be considered in the design including the fact that the area annually floods. The design phase will be conducted as a senior project.

Currently we are in-planning for a survery trip during the Fall of 2006. This trip will yield much of the information we need to begin the design phase. If all goes according to plan the design will be implemented during Summer 2007.

Woodburn Court Playground: Engineers Without Borders- Binghamton University was locally chartered last year. The group decided to participate in a project located in the Binghamton area as it would provide a great opportunity to create local community connections. Woodburn Court II apartments, managed by Conifer Reality, LLC, is a government subsidized housing unit located off of Exchange Street in down town Binghamton, NY. When EWB- Binghamton visited the site, they witnessed a run down playground facility that was structurally unstable along with being aesthetically unappealing.

EWB- Binghamton worked under Conifer Reality along side playground engineer Danny Bears, of Bears Playground Products to design and build a new playground structure. Conifer Reality helped obtain a $20,000 budget from the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Subsidy grants provided from the federal government. The design process was performed by EWB- Binghamton with Mr. Bears' guidance and a formitable playground was layed out that met the confines of the HUD grant. The next step for EWB-BU was to set a build date and obtain donations of plants and landscaping material.

A date was set for late August, just before Binghamton was back in session. That week the Bears Playground crew came to Binghamton with trucks of equipment and setting up the playground. About 20 students from EWB-BU worked tearing down old equipment, filling in sand covered areas, replacing borders, painting existing equipment that was determined to be structurally sound, and landscaping. EWB- BU also donated some of their fundraised money to the materials needed to landscape. During the build the children at the community brought great satisfaction to the EWB-BU members work as they asked to participate in the build. Many of the kids participated by raking mulch and helping plant flowers.

Ultimately EWB- Binghamton's first project was a great success. The residents of Woodburn Court II were very pleased with the outcome, and everything was completed on time and with attention to detail.
